Description

There are many types of agate, which can differ in pattern and colouration. Agates may have banded stripes, wavy lines, moss-like sections or numerous other variations. Agate is a hard gemstone, with a Moh’s rating of 6.5 – 7.

About

Agates, named after the Greek river Achates – now Dirillo, in Sicily – are found throughout the world, and the many different types are often named after the place they are initially found in. Rough agate is actually rather dull in appearence, however when cut and polished, the colours can be very vivid.

The use of agates dates back a long way into human history, with some agate tools from Ethiopia dating to over 2.5 million years ago. As well as creating agate tools, humans have used it to fashion amulets, talismans and other accessories.

They enhance mental abilities, and connect us with the world around us. They are associated with sensitivity and prudence, and during medieval times it was believed that carrying a piece of agate would make you more agreeable and pleasant to be around.

Health

Agates are useful in treating ailments relating to the stomach, colon, kidneys, liver and spleen. When worm against the skin agate can help boost circulation. It can also help with common ailments like colds and sniffles, and will protect its wearer from bites and stings.

Agate is very useful for pregnant woman, as it can protect mother and child during pregnancy, diminish pains and ease delivery. It continues to protect the child against falls, minor hurts and meningitis.

Magic

You can use agates for grounding, and connection with the earth, as well as for longevity. They can increase perception and stimulate mental faculties, enhancing one’s eloquence. Agates help to balance one’s physical, emotional, mental and spiritual states. They can be used when looking for, or dealing with the truth.

Legend & Lore

Ancient Greeks believed that agate amulets would give the owner strength and protection, and would bring them victory. They were thought to be powerful protection from accidents at sea. White agate was believed to be good for sleep, relieving insomnia and bringing pleasant dreams.

It is thought that if you suffer badly from the effects of the moon, particularly when it is new, then you should wear an agate for three days beforehand, the day of the new moon itself, and three days after to mitigate the effect.

The ancients also believed that wearing an agate would render you invisible, although they also believed that attaching them to the horns of an ox would ensure a good harvest.
