Lammas was originally celebrated at the time of the first harvest, which happened to coincide with the first of August. As the plants born in spring begin to wither and yield their fruits and seeds, so does the Sun God begin to weaken. The sun rises lower in the sky each day and the nights once more lengthen.

This is a time of both sorrow and joy for the Goddess as she knows her consort is dying, but yet he lives on inside her womb. As we attune ourselves to nature by the very food that we eat, we are reminded that nothing in this world is constant, yet everything exists as part of a cycle. This festival is named in honor of the God of all skills; Lugh.
