A Tale of Two Witches

Once upon a time, there were two Witches. One was a Feminist Witch and the other was a Traditionalist Witch. And, although both of them were deeply religious, they had rather different ideas about what their religion meant. The Feminist Witch tended to believe that Witchcraft was a religion especially suited to women because the image of the Goddess was empowering and a strong weapon against patriarchal tyranny. And there was distrust in the heart of the Feminist Witch for the Traditionalist Witch because, from the Feminist perspective, the Traditionalist Witch seemed subversive and a threat to "the Cause".

Alexandrian Old Laws

The Old Law

1. The Law was made and ordained of old.
2. The Law was made for the Wicca, to advise and help in their troubles.
3. The Wicca should give due worship to the gods and obey their will, which they ordain, for it was made for the good of Wicca as the worship of the Wicca is good for the gods. For the gods love the brethren of Wicca.
4. As a man loveth a woman by mastering her,
5. So should the Wicca love the gods by being mastered by them.
6. And it is necessary that the Circle which is the temple of the gods, should be truly cast and purified. And that it may be a fit pl...

Chants

Hoof and Horn

We all come from the mother,
And to her we shall return,
Like a drop of water
Flowing to the ocean.

Hoof and horn, hoof and horn,
All who die will be reborn.
Corn and grain, corn and grain,
All who fall will rise again.

We all come from the father,
And to him we shall return,
Like a spark of fire
Rising to the heavens.

Hoof and horn, hoof and horn,
All who die will be reborn.
Corn and grain, corn and grain,
All who fall shall rise again.

Charge of the Dark Goddess

The dark Goddess speaks to us through the mouths of Lilith, Kali, Tiamet, Hekate, Nix, the Black Madonna, Nemesis and Morgaine.

"I am the Darkness behind and beneath the shadows. I am the absence of air that awaits at the bottom of every breath. I am the Ending before Life begins again, the Decay that fertilizes the Living. I am the bottomless pit, the never-ending struggle to reclaim that which is denied. I am the key that unlocks every door. I am the glory of discovery, for I am that which is hidden, secluded and forbidden.

Come to me at the Dark Moon and see that which can not be seen, face the terror that is you...

Charge of the God

Listen to the words of the God, who is son, brother, lover and consort of the Lady:

"I am the fleet deer in the forest, I am the beach which receives the waves, I am the sun which warms the Earth. I am the Lord of the Spiral Dance of Life, Death and Rebirth, the gentle reaper, the winter stag and spring fawn. All things are of me, for I am of the Goddess, opposite, yet not opposing. I bring forth from the womb that is a tomb, for I am the seed which fertilizes. I am abundant Life, for I am the grain which grows and I am death, the harvest in the Fall. And I am rebirth after darkness, for I am the seed which springs forth an...

There shall ye assemble, ye who art fain to learn all sorcery, yet have not won it's deepest secrets; to these will I teach things that are yet unknown.

And ye sha...

Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau

Mae hen wlad fy nhadau yn annwyl i mi,
Gwlad beirdd a chantorion, enwogion o fri;
Ei gwrol ryfelwyr, gwlad garwyr tra mâd,
Tros ryddid gollasant eu gwaed.

Gwlad, Gwlad, pleidiol wyf im gwlad
Tra môr yn fur, i'r bur hoff bau,
O bydded i'r heniaith barhau.

Hen Gymru fynyddig, paradwys y bardd,
Pob dyffryn, pob clogwyn i'm golwg sydd hardd;
Trwy deimlad gwladgarol, mor swynol yw si
Ei nentydd, afonydd i mi.

Gwlad, Gwlad, pleidiol wyf im gwlad
Tra môr yn fur, i'r bur hoff bau,
O bydded i'r heniaith barhau.

Taffy Is A Welshman

Taffy is a Welshman, Taffy is no thief.
Someone came to Taffy's house and stole a leg of beef.

Taffy made no protest, for he doesn't like to row,
So the someone called on him again and stole the bloody cow.

They stole his coal and iron, they stole his pastures, too.
They even stole his language and flushed it down the loo.

Taffy is a Welshman, Taffy is a fool.
Taffy voted no, no, no when they offered him home rule.

Six days a week upon his knees Taffy dug for coal.
On the seventh he was kneeling, too, praying for his soul.

And now the mines are closing down and chapel...

The Cautioning Rede

Listen all and blessed be,
A new rede has come to me.
The rule of three may bring deeds 'round,
But to that trinity we are not bound.
Listen well and use your thoughts,
You may have swallowed more than you bought.
The Wiccan Rede is poetry;
Not ancient law of symmetry.
It is a warning, yes; that's true -
But a strict following we can not do.
For who decides what's wrong or right?
Perception relies on individual sight.
So think before you quote the rede,
Are your morals meant for another's deed?

The Story of The Fool

The Men and Women were hungry. All about them was the Mother's bounty, the gift of the Sacred King, and no way to harvest it.

The Fool came, and took of the Earth itself, and mixed it with Water and shaped a Pot. And He took of the Grass, and shaped a Basket, and Nets and Clothing.

And He took wood from the Tree. A straight piece of wood, and he took a stone, the very Bones of the Mother, and shaped it to a point, and fastened it to the wood and made a Spear.

With another stone He made a Hoe, and with another he crafted a Knife and gave them to the Men and Women.

And the Fool spoke, and sai...

The Wiccan Rede

Bide ye the Wiccan laws ye must, in perfect love and perfect trust,
Ye must live and let live, fairly take and fairly give.
Cast the circle thrice about, to keep unwelcome spirits out,
To bind the spell well every time, let the spell be spoken in rhyme,
Soft of eye and light of touch, speak ye little and listen much.
Deosil go by waxing moon, chanting out the Wiccan runes,
Widdershins go by waning moon, chanting out the baneful tune,
When the Lady’s moon is new, kiss the hand to her times two,
When the moon rides at her peak, then the hearts desire seek.
Heed the North wind’s mighty gale, lock the door and...

The Wise Goodwife

"Gramma, I feel hot."
"Lands, child, on a cool fall day like this? Come here and let me feel of your forehead. Tsk! Feels like fever. Off to bed with you!"
"Gramma, I don't feel good."
"I know child, I know. I reckon it's time to ask Goody Hawkins to help us."
"Who's Goody Hawkins?"
"Hush now, try to sleep. I'll come back soon."

"Gramma, where did you go?"
"Out into the woods at the back of the farm, child."
"Why, Gramma?"
"To get Goody Hawkins help."
"Who's Goody Hawkins?"
"Well, that's a long story."
"Tell me a story, Gramma."

"Well, you know 'bout the pilgrim days, Thanksgiving ...

The Witches' Creed

Hear now the words of the witches.
The secrets we hid in the night.
When dark was our destiny’s pathway,
that now we bring into the light.

Mysterious water and fire,
the earth and the wide ranging air,
By hidden quintessence we know them,
and will keep silent and dare.

The birth and the rebirth of nature,
the passing of winter and spring,
We share with the life universal,
rejoice in the magickal ring.

Four times a year the Great Sabbat returns,
and then the witches are seen,
At Lammas and Candlemas dancing,
a...

The Witches' Rune

Darksome night, and shining moon,
Hearken to the witches rune,
East then South, West then North,
Hear! Come! I call thee forth,
By all the powers of land and sea,
Be obedient unto me,
Wand and pentacle and sword,
Hearken ye unto my word,
Cords and censer, scourge and knife,
Waken all ye into life,
Powers of the witches blade,
Come ye as the charge is made,
Queen of moon and cup and bell,
Send your aid unto the spell,
Horned hunter of the night,
Work my will by magick rite,
By all the powers of land and sea,...
